Guide Review - Motorola i580 Review
Let's start by the negative points, keeping in mind that there are many nice things too. The Motorola i580 has a lot to offer but it suffers from a surprisingly low battery life. Of course, iDEN phones -- mostly carried around in a worker's truck or near the office where a charger is likely to be available -- aren't known for their impressive battery life, but the i580 is a champion at low stand-by and talk time. It will hardly last a full day's work with just two or three long conversations. Make sure a charger is never too far away.

That said, the i580 is not your usual boring nextel (now Sprint-Nextel) cell phone: 1.3 megapixel camera with flash, MicroSD card, Bluetooth, surprisingly not so bulky considering it's a rugged phone that can withstand extreme environments. And even some novelty bells and whistles, such as the "voice playback" features, that speaks back menu items and numbers dialed. Can be convinient in situations where you really can't look at your keypad but very annoying otherwise. The software just can't keep up. One nice side of it, though, is the voice caller ID. Your ringtone?: The number calling you being spoken. A great phone for anyone but me, since I always forget my charger.

Sony Ericsson P1 Smartphone Reviewed (Verdict: Worthy Successor to the P990)

We've been eyeballing the Sony Ericsson P1 smartphone for a while now, but the reviews are finally in. The verdict? It's pretty good. Besides being smaller than its P990 predecessor, it has the hybrid QWERTY keyboard (which is actually comfortable to use), a pretty decent 3-megapixel camera and a bunch of extras best fit for a spec sheet list than a review.

Even though the P1 isn't fantastic, with points knocked off for so-so reception and mediocre battery life, it has good outgoing sound, high volume and quite a sexy design. The whole package together was good enough to earn an 8.5 from phoneArena, which leads us to say that prospective buyers who are familiar with the Sony Ericsson smartphone line will love it, but previous users of Windows Mobile or Palm OS will have some getting used to.

Guide Review - Sony Ericsson w580i Review

In the three weeks that I tested the Sony Ericsson w580i, everyone who laid eyes on its sleek design was left amazed. One of the things that make the w580i look cool and cute is this pair of LED lights on each side, which changes colors and flashes when the phone rings, powers up, etc. It gives the phone a unique and futuristic appearance.

However, there were some design flaws. The cover was tough to slide up with just one finger because there was no grip area and the keypad did not impress me. The keys did not make me feel as if I pressed them, they were too small and they felt cheap.

As far as the Sony Ericsson w580i software is concerned, my patience was stretched to its limit. The menus were excruciatingly slow to react, with an inexplicable one-second delay before your selection appears on the display. Even going out of the screen saver mode seemed to take an eternity. The absence of green (Talk) and red (End) buttons (a design common to most Sony Ericsson phones) got on my nerves because when the w580i asks some questions, you can't even ignore them by pressing an "End" key. You have to answer them! I found that quite annoying.

As you would expect from a phone designed mainly for music, the w580i possesses a superior sound quality. The speakers produce a surprisingly deep and rich musical environment, even if the phone is only half an inch thick. The Sony Ericsson w580i is a "Walkman" phone, so it comes with a dedicated Walkman button to launch the music player. It has a full set of equalizer options, including "Mega Bass" and "Widening stereo" effects, which really enhanced my musical experience.

The two-mega pixel camera was easy to use and took good pictures apart from in low-light conditions, where the image was slightly grainy, compared to other phones.

That way, they can buy a prepaid SIM card in each country and use the phone with a local telephone number and carrier. In your case, however, that may not be the best option, as it would require some tinkering with the phone when on the go.

An easier but pricier method is to go with a Cingular or a T-Mobile cell phone. The plus side is that in most cases, the phone will automatically detect the local network when it is turned on. Both Cingular and T-Mobile have carrier partners in those countries, so you should get reliable coverage. The downside here is that because you'll be using a U.S. phone number, you'll need to keep track of how often you use the phone. International roaming can be pricey, so do your best to brace yourself for sticker shock from your bill. Another point to consider is that the phone should support 900 and 1800 GSM bands, as that will give you the most ideal coverage. Alternatively, if your relative is a Sprint or a Verizon customer, he or she can rent GSM phones from the carrier for the length of the trip. Activating an unlocked phone

An unlocked phone is a GSM phone that is not tied down to any carrier. This means that in the United States, you can use the phone with either T-Mobile or AT&T, and if you go abroad, you can swap out your SIM card for a foreign one if you so choose. Hooking up an unlocked phone for service is a relatively easy process, even if you don't have a contract already. Your first task is to order and sign up for service either at a store on the carrier's Web site. Of course, carrier reps will ask you if you need a phone, but you don't have to buy one by any means. Just tell the sales representative that you already own a handset. They may ask which model you own, but they shouldn't require that information to provide service. Once you've signed your contract and have your SIM card, just pop it into the phone and start making calls.

There are a couple points to keep in mind, though. In order to browse the Web, you will need to make sure your phone is programmed with the Internet settings unique to either AT&T or T-Mobile. The carrier can give you the settings, but you also can find them on the manufacturer's Web site. And don't listen if the store reps try to dissuade you from using an unlocked phone by telling you it's inherently faulty. That simply isn't true.

Also, if a phone comes free (or nearly free) with your contract, you should think about getting it anyway. It's always a good idea to have another phone around in case your primary handset is lost or stolen.

DIY: Record your own ring tones

What you'll need:
• In this project, you need a voice recorder application on the phone.

Record an audio clip
Symbian OS/S60 phone: Go to the main Menu and open the Media folder (or Office folder). Launch the Recorder application.

Just in case you want to transfer the recorded clips to your computer for further mixing, define the default storage device in the Recorder application. Open the Options menu and select Settings. If Memory Card is not selected as the Memory In Use, push the selection key to change the value to Memory Card.

Back in the main screen, highlight the red Record button. Push the selection key, and the recording will start. Hit the Stop key to end it.

Windows Mobile phone: Go to the Home screen and push the Start key. Locate the Voice Notes (Voice Recorder) application and open it. You may see an empty screen, but it means only that you haven't recorded anything yet.

When you are so close to the audio source that the phone microphone can pick up the sound, push the Record key. End the recording by hitting the Stop key.

Although you can record as long as there is memory space available, try to limit the recording to 10 to 60 seconds. Windows Mobile phones record audio in WAV format, which tends to result in large files. A long recording will take plenty of memory space, and your phone may not be able to play a lengthy tune anyway.

Other phones: Open the recorder application and record an audio clip.

Name the tune
Symbian OS/S60 phone: In the Recorder application, push the Options key and select Rename Sound Clip. Type a new name for the tune. You can change the name of the last recording only.

Windows Mobile phone: When you are in the main screen of the Recorder, highlight a recording in the list. Open the Menu and select Rename. Type a new name for the tune.

Set the recording as your new ring tone
Symbian OS/S60 phone: With the Voice Recorder on the screen, open Options. Select Go To Gallery. All the recordings you have saved can be accessed from the Gallery. You should see a list of recorded tunes. Highlight a recording, open Options and choose "Set as ringing tone."

Windows Mobile phone: When you are still in the Voice Recorder, highlight a recording in the list and open the Menu. Select Set As Ringtone.

If your phone menu doesn't show the Set As Ringtone choice at all, you have to set it manually. Go to the Home screen, push Start, and open File Manager. You have to move the recording from the folder /Storage/My Documents/Notes to the folder /Storage/Application Data/Sounds. Then, go to the Start menu and launch Settings. Select Sounds, open Ring Tone, and pick up the recorded ring tone.

While camera phones have arrived, sharing the digital photos from a phone isn't the smoothest process yet. Most carriers charge a monthly fee for photo-messaging services, and you can send pics only to someone who has the same carrier as you.

If paying for picture messaging isn't your cup of tea, there's always e-mail, either from your phone or your computer (as long as you have a data plan for sending e-mail). For sending pictures to friends who don't subscribe to your carrier, don't have cell phones capable of accepting images, or--the horror--don't have a cell phone, e-mail is your only option.

The details will vary from phone to phone, but the basic concept is the same. To e-mail directly from your cell phone:

1. Go to the picture gallery and select a picture to send.
2. Click options, then click Send.
3. If you previously saved the contact information, select the address from the phone book. Be sure to select the e-mail address from the contact information, not the phone number. Otherwise, you'll need to enter the e-mail address manually.
4. Insert a text message or an audio clip (optional).
5. Click Send.

Obviously you want one that's easy to use, without the extraneous features that most cell phones have these days (no text messaging or cameras, for example). Your best bet would be to seek out the most basic of cell phones that's designed to just make calls. You can take a look at our list of favorite basic cell phones for starters, but you should still keep a few pointers in mind when choosing a phone for the senior in your life. Pick a cell phone with large buttons, an easy-to-read screen, and an option to enlarge the text font size. Most LG phones have these design features, including the LG LX350 (though it does have a camera as well).

One company has stepped forward to offer cell phones specifically designed for seniors. GreatCall, a MVNO aimed at seniors, offers handsets like the Samsung Jitterbug Dial (A120). It has a large and bright keypad and a basic user-friendly design that is very easy to use. GreatCall also offers the Samsung Jitterbug OneTouch (A110) that's designed mostly for emergencies. It has only three buttons, which connect respectively to an operator, emergency services, and a programmable contact.
