The Samsung E420 is a low cost member of Samsung’s “La Fleur” series of fashion phones with a 128×160 pixel OLED display in 65,000 colours, a VGA resolution (0.3. megapixel) camera and that’s really about it, apart from the E420’s attractive looks.
In fact, it’s the SGH-E420’s looks that give the game away - the interior and basic specifications mark it out as an upgrade to the Samsung X400 (see below) from 2003. Yup, this is essentially a three-year-old phone with a bit of a facelift and a few new features.
Just how basic the Samsung E420 is becomes apparent when you look at what it doesn’t include - there’s no Bluetooth or MP3 player, and certainly no expandable memory.
On the other hand, the E420’s internal 2Mb of memory will be plenty given the resolution of the camera and lack of multimedia features. Samsung haven’t confirmed the weight, but given that the old X400 weighed 70 grams, you should expect the SGH-E420 to weigh in at not much more than that.
Samsung SGH-E420 specification:
Network: 900/1800/1900
Data: GPRS
Screen: 128×160 pixels, 65k colours colours (sub)
Camera: 0.3 megapixels
Size: Lightweight clamshell Size/weight tbc
Bluetooth: No
Memory card: No
Infra-red: No
Polyphonic: Yes
Java: Yes
Battery life: Not specified
Features aren’t everything though, because the Samsung E420 is designed to be a low cost handset.. although at around €190 / $220 / £115 (before tax and subsidy) the SGH-E420 looks somewhat overpriced, especially given that it doesn’t support Bluetooth. It’s an attractive phone though, and it manages to look good on both the inside and outside which is better than many rivals.
